Minor Ailments & Contraception in Kelowna
BC pharmacists can assess and, when appropriate, prescribe for a defined list of minor conditions and contraception needs.

Appointments are recommended so we can give you the time and privacy you need.
The assessment determines whether pharmacist care is appropriate or whether another clinician is the better next step.
Common conversations
Seasonal allergies, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, dermatitis, acne, cold sores, fungal infections, contraception and other conditions covered by the BC program.
What happens next
The pharmacist assesses your symptoms, explains the options and may prescribe when the condition and clinical criteria fit. Some concerns require referral.
What can a BC pharmacist assess?
The provincial minor-ailments program covers these 21 conditions, as well as contraception. Eligibility and clinical criteria apply; the pharmacist may recommend another level of care.
- Mild acne
- Allergies and hay fever

- Fungal infections of the skin and nails
- Headaches
- Heartburn (acid reflux)
- Hemorrhoids
- Hives and itching, including bug bites
- Impetigo
- Menstrual pain
- Nicotine dependence
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
- Pinworms or threadworms
- Shingles
- Skin rash (dermatitis)
- Sprains and strains
- Oral thrush
- Upset stomach (indigestion)
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infection
- Vaginal yeast infection
Common questions
Is the pharmacist assessment covered?
The BC program covers assessments for eligible BC residents with a Personal Health Number. Medication costs may be separate.
Will I always receive a prescription?
No. Depending on the assessment, the pharmacist may recommend self-care, a non-prescription medicine, a prescription or care from another clinician.
Do I need an appointment?
Kiwi recommends an appointment so the pharmacist can set aside time for your assessment. Call the pharmacy to check availability.
