Can you get a strep test at a pharmacy in B.C.?

You can compare your throat with a dozen pictures online and still not know whether it's strep. Meanwhile, swallowing hurts, you have a day to get through, and you'd like to know where to go.

Yes, you can get a rapid strep test at Kiwi Pharmacy & Wellness in Kelowna when the pharmacist determines it's appropriate. But there's a detail worth knowing before you make the trip: the test and a prescription are separate steps.

How bad it feels doesn't tell you what's causing it

Strep gets plenty of attention, but viruses cause most sore throats. The CDC estimates that around one in ten adults with a sore throat has strep. That's a general estimate, not a way to diagnose yourself.

A cough, runny nose or hoarse voice can point towards a virus. Other symptoms may make strep more likely, but looking in the mirror or working through a symptom checklist cannot reliably settle the question. Clinical guidance explains why an assessment, and sometimes testing, is needed.

At Kiwi, the pharmacist starts by checking whether a rapid test makes sense for your situation. You don't need to arrive convinced you have strep. Being unsure is a perfectly reasonable reason to call.

What happens after the swab matters

A rapid strep test uses a swab from the back of the throat and tonsils to check for group A strep bacteria. At Kiwi, the test is processed in the pharmacy and the pharmacist explains the result. You can read more about how rapid strep testing works through HealthLink BC.

If the result is positive, Kiwi's current pathway directs you to your family doctor or a walk-in clinic for assessment and a prescription if needed. The pharmacy testing visit does not include an antibiotic-prescribing appointment. The pharmacist explains how to take the result to the next clinician.

We'd rather you know that before you rearrange your day. When you're choosing where to get checked, knowing what happens after the result is just as useful as knowing where you can get the test. Our rapid strep-testing service page explains the process at Kiwi.

A negative result still needs some context

A negative rapid test means it hasn't detected strep bacteria in the sample. It doesn't tell you every possible reason your throat hurts, and rapid tests can miss strep. Depending on the circumstances, a clinician may recommend a throat culture or another assessment. HealthLink BC explains these limits.

If you're still unwell or getting worse, follow up. Let the clinician know you've had a rapid test and what the result was. For a child, ask about the appropriate assessment and follow-up rather than assuming the adult pathway applies.

Severe trouble breathing or trouble swallowing your saliva needs emergency help. Call 911 rather than waiting for a pharmacy test. HealthLink BC lists these as emergency warning signs.

Start with a call

Before coming in, call to confirm test availability, the current fee and whether the service is suitable for the person who needs it. A short call gives you a chance to understand the next step before making the trip.
